Called Bolo rei in Portugal, this cake equivalent to the cake of Kings in the shape of a crown is a real little treasure adorned with many candied fruits and dried similar to beautiful precious stones.
This recipe was introduced in Portugal by the French in the nineteenth century. It is a cake that is also eaten in Spain and Mexico under the name of Rosca de Reyes (ring of kings) and in the south of France where it is called Gâteau des Rois. Its recipe varies from one country to another, today we present the Portuguese version!
As for the frangipane, the cake of the Kings contains a small bean which according to the tradition crowned the one or who finds it of “king” or “queen”.
